Situated in the north section of the Wapta Icefield and very near the Peyto Glacier, Peyto Hut is an alpine hut inside the Banff National Park. This is the oldest national park in Canada and is located in the Rocky Mountains, one of the most popular destinations for snow and mountain activities in the country.
On this opportunity, I invite you to combine an alpine course with ascents on the Wapta Icefield. The purpose of the course is to help you improve your alpine skills and prepare you for future experiences in the mountains. I’ll teach you what I know and give you useful advice.
During these 3 days, our base will be the Peyto Hut and we’ll explore the beautiful areas surrounding the Wapta Icefield. We’ll arrange the accommodation and meals for you and you’ll share the experience with other participants in a group trip. Please, consider that it’s important to have a good level of fitness for this trip.
So, do you find this course at the Peyto hut interesting? Then, don’t hesitate to send the request and book your place. We’ll start making all the necessary arrangements right away.
Another good option could be this 4-day mountaineering trip in Valley of the Ten Peaks. Check it out!

What experience and how fit do I need to be to climb this mountain? Is this program suitable for children or older people?
Moderate level of fitness. Must be able to carry overnight pack for up to 6hrs on inclined terrain with snow.
How far in advance should I start training and what kind of training do you suggest?
As far in advance as possible. Uphill hiking (or training) with weight in the backpack can be some of the best training for this kind of trip.
Will I need to bring any technical equipment of my own? Is it possible to rent equipment, and if so, what would be the approximate cost of that?
Ideally, you climb with your own equipment. If required, we can outfit you with all technical equipment (for free) and boots (small fee). Personal items, overnight gear etc are required. All technical equipment will be provided.
Will there be porters to help to carry group and personal equipment?
Available upon request.
How will accommodation and meals be handled on the mountain?
We'll be staying in the Bow and Peyto huts operated by the ACC. Bunks, mattresses, stoves, fuel and kitchen equipment is located at the hut. Guide and guests will carry in food (mix of fresh and dehydrated) to the hut, where the guide will provide the cooking.
What happens in the event of bad weather?
Alternate plans will be made by the guide. Challenging weather is inherent to the mountain experience, but hardly ever stops us from completing alternate objectives. No refunds are available due to inclement weather. Refunds are only available if the guiding service cancels the trip entirely due to safety concerns or personal reasons. Please see next paragraph regarding trip cancellation/interruption insurance.
Are there any other special requirements such as permits/insurance/vaccines that we need to consider before the tour?
Emergency medical travel insurance is required and trip cancellation/interruption insurance is strongly recommended. No rescue insurance is required in the Canadian National Parks, but you are required to purchase a Park Pass for the duration of the trip to cover any potential rescue.
What is the guide-to-client ratio to climb this mountain?
The ratio for this objective is 1 guide to 6 guests. If you'd like to have a larger group on this objective, please inquire. We can bring on additional guides.
What is the best time of the year to climb this mountain?
June to September
Can I join a group?
We only offer custom groups, but occasionally we will have a group looking for additional members. Please inquire.
Mountain Guide
Growing up in the rather flat country of the Netherlands, I never knew what I was missing till visiting the Canadian Rockies in my early 20s. We live in the small town of Exshaw, surrounded by tall limestone peaks. I'm a passionate alpine climber, working and recreating around Banff, Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway. I'm certified as an apprentice Alpine Guide with the ACMG.
The Canadian Rockies are most known for their spectacular (and reliable!) ice and mixed climbing. Whether you're hoping to tick one of the hard classics or learn to swing an ice tool, we have it all!
Please contact me if you're interested in both a guided and educational mountain experience, in the Canadian Rockies and beyond!

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
