Description

Prenj Mountain, which forms part of the Dinaric Alps, is located in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Well-preserved and with stunning sharp peaks, it's widely considered one of the country's prettiest mountains.

We'll start our adventure hiking along Old Tobacco Road. This was once the preferred route for transporting tobacco to Bosnia from the Herzegovina region, since such trade was illegal and police weren't likely to be encountered on this rugged path. At first we'll be trekking in a wooded area, but later the trees clear and allow us great views of the surrounding mountain peaks.

Upon parting from Old Tobacco Road we'll begin our ascent to Prenj Mountain's highest peak, the Green Head (2155 m). When we arrive you can soak in the beauty of the mountain range and take pictures. After resting a bit we'll descend to the refuge where we'll spend the night. The lack of light pollution here means the stars shine amazingly bright.

We'll finish the descent on day two, taking another path so that we continue to discover new sites. After a couple of hours and having returned to the starting point, we'll drive back to Mostar.

Hiking Guide

Welcome to your Herzegovina Hiking Adventure. My name is Miroslav Mihalj, born in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. I am the current president of the Croatian Mountaineering Association “Prenj 1933 Mostar”, certified Mountain Guide and Rescuer and I offer hiking, snowshoeing and ski touring tours around this beautiful region.

As mountain hiker I am proud to have climbed some of the highest peaks in Europe and Balkans as well as local peaks in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which I have climbed numerous times both in winter and summer.

I enjoy nature, that feeling of freedom and serenity the mountains offer. They are a place to find yourself and push your boundaries. I’m lucky to have been born in a place surrounded by beautiful and intact mountain ranges hiding the most exciting nature my country has to offer.

Very much excited to meet you and share with you this truly wonderful world!

What people are saying about Herzegovina

Sara

We really enjoyed our trip with our guide Mijo. He was extremely good in communicating at WhatsApp and very flexible. We ended our trip in a beautiful river with amazing surrounding view. I can highly recommend to do some hiking in the mountains around Mostar, really worth it.

Due to lack of snow the trip became a hike instead of a snowshoeing trip. Nevertheless it was an awesome experience in pristine mountain area. Miroslav was great. We didn’t meet another sole the full 22km and the lunch stop at the mountain hut was excellent.

Miroslav was a fantastic guide. We wanted to see Outlaw’s Gate up Čvrsnica but didn’t know where to begin, including how to get to the trailhead. Miroslav picked us up from Mostar and took us up to the top. Friendly, knowledgable and funny, we always felt at ease with his expertise on the route. Miroslav is the best guide in Herzegovina - cheers!
