FAQs: Rock Climbing in Turkey

What should I know about Rock Climbing Turkey?

While the most popular rock climbing in Turkey is undoubtedly along the scenic southern coast, heading farther north to the mountains is a real treat as well. Ilgaz Dağları is a popular ski resort in the winter, but offers ample climbing opportunities in the summer.

Heading into central Turkey is highly advised as well. While the climbing may not  be as great as either the north or the south, heading up in a balloon will blow you away. The detour is well worth it and you will not be disappointed taking in this magnificent landscape from above.

The northeast also boasts plentiful climbing and stunning views. Heading up Kaçkar Dağı, which is one of the most popular summits in the area, offers great views into the Black Sea as well as down into the surrounding valleys.

Why should I choose Turkey for my Rock Climbing adventure?

Stunning scenery

Wherever you go in Turkey, you’re sure to be met with stunning views of land, air and sea. The southern coast is especially nice with large sea cliffs overlooking the turquoise Aegean. Farther inland, hot air balloons take you over Cappadocia, which is a once in a lifetime experience.

Plenty of variety

From thrilling sports climbs on the Aegean seaside to trad climbs up into caves farther inland, there is plenty of climbing this incredibly diverse country. Whether you are a beginner of expert, you are sure to find just what you are looking for and even more.

Amazing Istanbul

Spend some time in the country’s largest city once you have arrived. There is plenty to do from the chic cafes and restaurants in the trendy Galatasaray neighborhood. Be sure to head to the Reina Sofia and Blue Mosque too while you’re there. Don’t forget to try some of the fabulous local food, either.

What can I expect from the weather in Turkey?

Due to its location on the Aegean Sea, many of the best rock climbing spots in Turkey are temperate and available to climb year-round. Winters have average temperatures between 5°C and 10°C. Summers tend to be much hotter with average temperatures from 25°C to 30°C. Winter is the rainiest time of year, while summer is usually clear and dry.

How can I get to Turkey?

Just about any trip to Turkey begins with a flight into the international airport in Istanbul (ISL). From here it is possible to connect with local airport in Antalya (ATY). From here buses connect much of the surrounding region or you could rent a car.
