Rock Climbing in Romania: Top Outdoor Adventures Awaiting You

Romania should be considered a hidden gem among European rock climbing destinations. Numerous stark rock faces may be found throughout the Carpathian Mountains, offering excellent climbing opportunities for beginners, intermediate and advanced climbers.

While the mountains around Cluj are particularly good for rock climbing, there are many other excellent spots as well. In the very north of the country, Rodnei Mountains National Park is great for climbing and offers some of the best views the country has to offer. The Southern Carpathians, Trascau Mountains and Făgăraş Mountains are also chock-full of climbing options as well.

As climbing continue to gain popularity in Romania, numerous climbing gyms have opened in Bucharest. Since your trip starts here, it’s a great opportunity to take a couple of days and hit the gym for a warm up as well as explore the old capital city.

The Carpathian Mountains are full of amazing scenery. Home to Europe’s most pristine forests, heading out on a rock climbing adventure allows you to be at one with nature and enjoy the mountains, forests, valleys and waterfalls. You may even get the chance to see dome of the country’s remaining black bears, which inhabit the mountain range.

Beautiful Brașov

If you’re looking to spend your downtime exploring some of Romania’s culture, then head to Brașov. Not only is it ideally located for some excellent Carpathian climbing, but it is also home to the famed Black Church and a quick bus ride away from Bran and Dracula’s castle. Enjoy vibrant nightlife, excellent local cuisine and plenty of excellent scenery when you stay here.

During the summer, the Carpathian Mountains offer perfect conditions for climbing. Average daily temperatures range from 13 °C to 18 °C. Temperatures tend to be a bit cooler during the spring and autumn. The summer, however, is also the wettest time of year. Spring and autumn both tend to be a bit drier.

Any trip to Romania will likely begin with a flight into Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP). You can get here via a direct flight from most major European airports. From here, it is easy and scenic to take a train up into the Carpathian mountains and on to your final destination.
