FAQs: Rock Climbing in Austria

What should I know about Rock Climbing Austria?

The landlocked country of Austria lies in central Europe and is part of the European Union. It is bordered by Italy and Slovenia to the south, Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west, Germany and Czech Republic to the north, and Hungary and Slovakia to the east. Mountains largely dominate the territory within its borders, which is host to parts of the Central Eastern Alps, Northern Limestone Alps, and the Southern Limestone Alps.

Why should I choose Austria for my Rock Climbing adventure?

A wonderland of icy climbs

Dominated by the Alps, Austria is home to some wonderful climbing spots. When the weather dips and the water freezes, the landscape transforms. There are glacial walls, ice sheets and frozen falls. Whether it’s the western state Tyrol, the south-eastern state of Styria or the southernmost state of Carinthia, the wintry wonderland offers incredible opportunities to climb.

Deep authentic traditions

Despite the passing of time, bitter wars and conflict, the passing of empires, the traditions high in the alpine mountains of Austria have remained resilient. Cattle drives onto the pastures, ringing of the bells upon witnessing dark clouds carrying a storm to warn the farmers, the traditional show of strength between herdsmen and dairymen in a now UNESCO-protected cultural piece of heritage.

Rich range of climbs

When the temperature dips across the vast mountainside of Austria, the landscape begins to offer a wide range of wintry climbs. If you’re a fresh-faced beginner to ice climbing, then safe spots in the valley of Pitztal or high in the Otztal are great locations. For more confident and skilful climbers, then the more vertical walls and winding slopes present a more challenging climb.

What can I expect from the weather in Austria?

The Alps dominate much of the country, and so an alpine climate covers large and varied areas. The winter months are colder in the mountainous regions compared with the lowlands. And snow blankets the mountainside from around November to April.

German.

Bernd went above and beyond on this trip, working with us and finding the best places to teach us multi-pitch climbing. He watched the weather to find the best locations for the given weather. He is an excellent mountaineer and taught us so much.

Mathaise was awesome. We had a great time!

A last minute conflict caused Stefan to be unavailable, Even so, he arranged for another guide to ensure we had a great day climbing!

I would like to drop a note saying how amazing of a time I had climbing with Mathias. Coming from the United States all I asked was for a true Austrian Alps climbing experience. The first day we spent multi-pitch sport climbing up to grade UIAA 6+. Such and amazing day on bullet proof limestone.  The second day I got to experience alpine climbing that started with a two hour hike up a hanging glaciated valley to one of the classic routes.  I highly recommend arranging a climbing trip with Mathias. I will guarantee you will be exhausted at the end of each day with a huge smile on your face.  It was truly an experience of a life time and next time I am in Austria I will be booking another adventure with this group.

We booked Bernd to organise a day of top rope and lead climbing for our family who climb regularly indoors but are novices outdoors. Bernd asked the right questions and selected a perfect area for us to climb with a large number of routes of differing grades. Bernd gave us the right amount of instruction and guidance - we are already planning our next trip to Austria and will be repeat customers.
