Stary Smokovec is a settlement that is connected with the town of Vysoke Tatry in the north of Slovakia. It lies at the foothills of the High Tatra mountain range close to the border with Poland. The picturesque town features a hotel built in 1904, a sanatorium and scenic, rugged landscapes that rippled out in all directions.

Half of the range lies in Romania but the highest peaks are inside Slovakia, such as Ladovy (2,627 meters), Gerlachovska (2,642 meters) and the highest of them all, Gerlachovsky (2,655 meters).

High life wildlife

The rugged region cultivates ideal habitats for a whole host of rare and endemic animals and plants. These include the goat-antelope and the Tatra chamois as well as the Eurasian brown bear, lynx, wolf, fox and the Alpine marmot. While the rich flora include the Tatra scurvy-grass, yellow mountain saxifrage an European larch all bring color to the town of Stary Smokovec.

The region receives a temperate climate, with higher altitudes receiving cooler temperatures.
