The state of Montenegro is located in the southeast of Europe, resting on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. It is bordered to the north by Bosnia and Herzegovina, to the east by Serbia and Kosovo, to the south by Albania, and to the west by Croatia. The ancient lands of the country hold a collection of outside cultural influences, including the empires of both Byzantine and Ottoman, the federation of Yugoslavia, and a number of periods of independence.

Although the size of the country is small, Montenegro is packed-full of stunning landscapes from its western coastlines to northern highlands. And although around 90 percent of the country’s terrain is covered with mountains, it is still relatively unknown for international tourism. The cocktail of climate, landscape and geography creates a unique biological diversity, considered to be a European hotspot. An abundance of freshwater fish, flocks of bird species, and the protected species of Eurasian brown bear all call Montenegro home. And the immense flora that covers the ground includes rare species.

The climate of Montenegro varies from Mediterranean along the coast regions to continental as you move more inland. Here the winters are cooler given the higher altitude. And in the far north, the highlands resemble an alpine climate.
